"The gold of the Incas”

Quinoa - the new staple food?

The special thing about quinoa: it contains all nine essential amino acids (proteins), like no other yet known plant in the world. Thus Quinoa is probably the protein most vegetable food:

Ah, quinoa (pronounced keen-wa)! It is a staple item in our family. It is a powerhouse food which packs a whollup of nutrition in every bite. We've been eating quinoa for years. We always have 2 cups of cooked quinoa in the fridge to add to anything like soups, eggs, sauces, anything. My oldest is a vegetarian, and so she loves this stuff. It is unique in being a complete protein, hence the love vegetarians have for this food item. Quinoa is not actually a true 'grain' but gets classified as such because of how it looks. It you haven't tired it, go for it. Your health will thank you for it. smile

Re: "The gold of the Incas”

when i was in peru a guide tought us that researchers think that it is quinoa that gives the peruvian people the strength and health to resist the tough climate of the andeans. quinoa is the only cereal that is able to grow in these high altitudes, where corn and maize cannot grow any more. in the peruvian food, quinoa is an essential base cereal - and tasty smile

at home i tried to grow quinoa by myself, but my (organic) quinoa i sew did not sproud. maybe next year. the plant itself is very beatiful i love it!

Where can one get hold of Quinoa and does anyone know if the seeds are available? Presumably health food shops would stock it, but I have never noticed it. I suppose I should ask really; it's a man thing. wink

Re: "The gold of the Incas”

well we (my fiance and me) just took the grain contained in the package of quinoa. essentially, these are the seeds. if you buy organic quinoa, ther should not be a big thing to sow it.
that is what we did last year but as we had a lot of other stuff to do, we just sew some seeds to a little piece of earth. bu it did not germinate ... for whatever reason we don't know. next season we are going to experience again, using better soil and taking care of it - cause i love the plants they are so beautiful wink
when i was in peru i did not know that it was quinoa they were growing in the fields i always thought they somehow look like hemp having enoumous buds (heaven is close yiihaa), but the strong red color told me that it could not be hemp big_smile
